Healthcare Services in Assam
Assam, the gateway to the Northeast, is the most developed and advanced state in the entire northeast. Assam
is a developed state in terms of the medical facilities it provides to the people. Patients from the entire northeast rush to Assam in case of medical emergency. Assam has state of art technology in hospitals where advanced health
facilities are available. There are government hospitals, private hospitals, eye hospitals, maternity hospitals, fertility clinics, dental hospitals, cancer hospitals and veterinary hospitals and private chambers and clinics in Assam to deal with hospital emergency in the state.
In view of Covid 19 crisis, Assam government has set up helpline for the assistance of affected patients. It has also authorised many private and government hospitals for carrying out vaccination. All these steps are been taken to minimize and reduce the mortality rate in the state.
Health Schemes of Assam Government
For the overall benefit of patients the Government of Assam has launched many schemes which gives funds to patients. These schemes take care of the girl child, children and adults belonging to poverty line, patients suffering from speciality diseases like kidney disease, liver disease, cancer and so on. The ‘Mamata’ scheme seeks to reduce IMR and MMR, by insisting on a post-delivery hospital stay of 48 hours of the mother and the newborn. During discharge from hospital the mother receives a gift hamper called the ‘Mamata’ kit which contains essential products for the baby like baby powder, oil, mosquito net, flannel cloth and so on. Till date 10,01,923 ‘Mamta kit’ has been distributed since 2010-11 to 2013-14.
“Mamoni” is a scheme of the Government of Assam that encourages pregnant women to undergo at least 3 ante-natal checkups which identify danger signs during pregnancy. Cash assistance to pregnant women for nutritional support of Rs. 1000 is given in two instalments. Till 20013-14 a total of 36,50,453 numbers of cheques has been disbursed.
The Majoni scheme is under “Assam Bikash Yojana”. Under this scheme social assistance is given to all girl children. A fixed deposit of Rs. 5,000 is given to girl child for 18 years. Till 2013-14, total 3,08,109 numbers of Fix Deposit has been issued.
The Morom scheme provides financial support to indoor patients of Government Health Institutions for supplementary nutrition and compensation for wage loss during hospitalisation and post hospital expenses. Amount paid under Morom scheme till 2013-14 is Rs. 2061.66 Lakhs.
Under this Govt of Assam sponsored scheme free operations for children having congenital heart disease is given by the Assam government. Total 2,114 children have been treated till 17th July 2014.
Under “Sushrusha” scheme an amount of Rs. 1 lakh is granted as financial assistance to people who have undergone kidney transplantation after 1st April, 2010. So far 243 numbers of patients have been given one time financial assistance of Rs. 1.00 Lakh till 17th July 2014.
Assam Arogya Nidhi (AAN)
The Assam Arogya Nidhi (AAN) Initiative provides financial assistance up to Rs.1, 50,000 to BPL families and families having a monthly income of less than Rs. 10,000 for general and specialized treatment of life threatening disease and injuries caused by natural disasters. As on date, 822 patients have availed the benefits of the Assam Arogya Nidhi.
Launched by the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Assam, Sneha Sparsha scheme aims at extending financial assistance for specialized treatment of children below 12 years of age afflicted with some serious ailments like thalessemia, Kidney Transplant, Liver Transplant, Cochlear Implant, Blood cance and so on.
Under this scheme free surgery is provided to children having cleft palate and lip. Till 14th July 2014, total 11,860 nos of children having cleft lip have been operated under “Operation Smile”.Sanjeevani: The services aims in early identification, screening, referral, follow-up and free medicines for effective Chronic disease management in the villages. From 1st March 2011 to 13th July 2014, total 26,56,136 patients visited Sanjeevani services.
